Some new kicks

I went to the local running store because it was that time again to get a new pair of running shoes. My last pair i got about 6 months ago and my body starts telling me when it is time for a new pair with little aches and pains (usually in my hips). I tried on a lot of pairs. I have a little issue since my left foot is almost a whole size smaller than my right foot. They suggested i go down a size from what i have been wearing. But, in order to do that i had to find just the right pair that wouldn't be too snug on my larger right foot (which most were).

I really wanted some fun bright shoes for my next pair and i have had Adidas before and loved them so when i tried these on and they felt good on both feet that was it...i was done looking, sold!

I bought a new pink running top the other day and then thought, oh wow that is going to clash with my shoes...ha! Oh wee, i will b e nice and colorful! :)

Besides shoes i got another new toy as well...i will blog about that later.

Warrior Dash

This was my first adventure race. A friend of mine was registered and was unable to do it so we she transferred her bib to my name. So. much. fun! I will be doing another one of these for sure!

before we got dirty...

the race started out with an off road run of about a mile and then the obstacles started after that. We started right in getting dirty on the first obstacle which was a crawl/army crawl on the ground and then got right into some muddy/nasty water pulling ourselves across with a rope.

There was climbing, swimming out to and balancing across buoys, walking and balancing across small boards, jumping over multiple mid size walls (i think that was the obstacle that made me so extremely sore the next day), climbing through an underground tunnel, sliding down metal polls (the one that i had the hardest time mentally doing, it did hurt your hands), making your way over a huge pile of old tires of all sizes, jumping over fire, and last but not least the mud pit! Do you know how hard it is to move in mud? Oh and to keep upright when getting out on the other side, especially when trying to get your sister back for the mud she piled on you?

yep there she was, he boys even caught her doing it red handed...

I was worried about being able to complete some of the obstacles because i didn't know what to expect but they were all very doable. And did i mention fun??

After the race they were....impressive!e taking shoe donations. This was one of about 4 or 5 piles of shoes
Fun times!

Garmin half marathon

Saturday was another race day. I have been training for the Garmin half marathon. I really wanted a new pr on this one! I decided to start with the 1:50 pace group. I stayed right with them for the first couple of miles and then was feeling pretty good so went out just a bit ahead of them...which is where i stayed (about a minute or two ahead of them) for the rest of the run.

At 7 to 8 miles i was feeling good and thought about speeding up but was really nervous about pushing too hard and dying out at the end so i kept a pretty steady pace until the last two miles and then pushed a little faster to the finish line.

My hubby and kids got up early and came out to support me. They were all over the course cheering me on! Thank you guys!

John knew just how bad i would like to beat 1:50 so he was getting a little nervous for me when 1:48 came around at the finish line but then i popped around the corner shortly after that. Pheww!

These pictures are all backwards in progression because this is my fist blog post since the new set up and it is opposite of how it used to be...

The finish line clock went crazy for all the photographers...it wouldn't let you take a picture...see, my time is 0!

My family was cheering for me here and i must have been real focused because i didn't even see them at this spot!

around 7-8 mile point

It was a very fun day! It's always a good day when you accomplish a goal! I took 7 minutes off my previous pr. Thank you God for keeping me feeling strong on race day! That was my prayer that morning.

Next up is some running over fire, climbing walls, crawling through mud...more fun times ahead!

Run for Mercy 5k

Saturday was the Run for Mercy 5/10k race put on by Oceans of Mercy to raise money for orphans in South Africa. 100 percent of our race registration went straight to the charity, thought that was cool!

Rain was looming but it held off till most of the runners finished. My family stayed tucked into bed this Saturday morning (who can blame em) so the below picture was my fill in race pic.

I felt pretty good besides the fact that i started pushing it a little early when i thought i just had to round the corner to the finish line but alas we had to round the parking lot...so my pushing it lasted a little longer than was real comfortable! :)

I was able to get a new personal best in the 5k with a time of 22 minutes...my high school 5k best is now seeming more within reach so i may have to train harder and try to get there...maybe by my 40th birthday :)

The medals for the race were handmade by a lady in South Africa. Very unique! I won 2nd in my age and 6th female.

There was a pancake feed included after the race which i skipped cause...wait for it...i think i am the only person alive that doesn't care for pancakes! So when they said "run fast so you can get to the pancakes"...that really wasn't very motivating. Now if they would have a big cheese omelet with some crispy bacon....now that would motivate me!

Fun times...next race is the half marathon that i have been training for that is in two weeks!

Westport St Patricks Day 4 mile Run

Last Saturday the whole family and i decked ourselves out in green and went down to the St Pats run...

i had picked up a few fun things here and there to be all festive, some of which were a bunch of buttons that i wore here and there...i had lost a lot of them to my girls before the race ever started and after i was done running they were taking the rest off of me as fast as they could

The start was packed! Not the most ideal of starts if you are wanting to get a personal best, but fun and festive! I spent the first mile dodging, weaving, and barely missing car mirrors of cars parked along side the road.

thats's me with the knee high socks and holding my hands all weird...yep always do!

I did not feel good during this race! I wanted to stop more than once. I have no idea what my problem was besides the fact that i felt hungry. I had eaten but maybe just a little too early since the race wasn't till 10 am. Me plus running hungry equals no bueno!

I had set out in my mind to beat my previous 4 mile time of 30:15 and honestly i thought i was way behind that but ended up finishing in 30:27. Apparently i didn't have my math brain turned on either or i think i could have made up 15 seconds! Here is my official stats. I am going to start saving these this way...i was recently looking back at some of mine i had saved from years ago and enjoyed looking through them so i figure some day i will enjoy looking back at these...

The kids got their faces painted while i ran. It was a fun morning and we went and celebrated with a pizza buffet afterward.

Happy St Patricks Day! I went to the running club's group run this morning and wore a green shirt without even remembering when i woke up this morning while it was still dark that it was St Pat's Day. Not bad! :)

The first mile

Today was one of those days that i didn't really want to go running. I was laying on the couch munching on some sprees (that i stole out of my kids b-day candy)since i had already determined earlier in the day that i wasn't going to have time to run before work this evening. The phone rang and my hubby said "did you get my text/ get your running clothes on, i'm getting off a little early!"

Normally i would be all excited but today my thought was "oh crap, i'm eating candy and i'm not in the frame of mind to run" but i jumped up and snarfed down a peanut butter sandwich real quick to hopefully offset the sugar i had just eaten and got my running clothes on.

Earlier in the day the weather was perfect for running but by 2 pm when i was heading out the winds were at 23-26 mph...great if your running with the wind but totally sucks running against it!

For the first mile i was just feeling like a load of bricks trying to run. It might have been somewhat because of the speed work i did at the track yesterday that my body didn't like so much but while i was running i was thinking about all of my runs...the first mile is never great. I need the first mile to just warm up. Sometimes in the first mile i just feel like turning around and going home ( the thought crossed my mind today) .

Thank goodness the first mile doesn't last forever and by miles two and three i start getting in the groove. Of course today i turned and started running against the wind in miles two and three so getting in the groove was a little tougher today.

I then also got chased by two little dogs that acted like they wanted to eat me. I once again humiliated myself by dancing around kicking at them and screaming on the sidewalk of a semi busy street. This is twice in the last couple of months and i have had my fill of little pooches chasing me down!

I am at 24 miles for this week and tomorrow i am OFF. My body is tired, it needs it and then plan to finish off the week on Saturday with a long run.

Hope your having a great week! Hope you get past that tough first mile!

Love2Run 4 mile

Sunday morning i ran the Love2Run 4 mile run in KC at the downtown airport. There is a road that goes around the entire airport and that was the course.

Of course it had to be extremely cold this past weekend so that i could be 2 for 2 in picking very cold days to race! It was 8 degrees when i woke up but got up to around 15 degrees by 9 am when the race started. There was not hardly any wind so that was a plus! There were around 650 runners out running in the cold.

I had hand warmers stuck in my gloves but my fingers went numb...finally around 2 miles in i could feel my fingers again and my toes finally thawed out too (they weren't too bad but a little numb for awhile in spite of wearing two pairs of socks!)

I really like this course. They called it "flat and fast" but there were two little hills at around 3 miles...not bad ones just enough to think"hey now that's not flat" :)

John took a picture of the finish line before anyone started coming across it...

This was in the last mile of the race...the city view above is what you could see the entire last mile so i enjoyed the view

I have not run a 4 mile race in quite a long while so i was a little unsure how to pace myself and whether or not i should go at my 5k race pace. I went in with the goal of finishing before 33 minutes. My finishing time was 30:15 so then i was a little irritated with myself that i hadn't pushed a little harder to get under the 30 minute time. It's ok though because there is next month...going to be running another 4 mile race in March so now i have a second shot at it :)

Got a medal for placing 3rd in my age division and then enjoyed some yummy hot chocolate!

So, February's race is complete and two of the hardest months to race in are down...10 more to go! Next month it had better not be 8 degrees when i wake up on race morning!!
